Transfer options

We offer three kinds of DVD transfer: Basic DVD, Basic Plus DVD and Pro DVD. All are transferred using highest quality professional equipment, with Dolby Digital audio encoding.

Final DVD quality is influenced by the length of the video contained within it. Although our Basic and Basic Plus DVDs can store up to 120 minutes, quality is slightly reduced at this point.

If the highest quality is important for your needs, we recommend you go with our Pro DVD transfer service. Our Pro DVDs use a two-pass VBR (Variable Bitrate) encode, versus the single-pass VBR used for our Basic DVDs and Basic Plus DVDs.

The only difference between our Basic DVD and Basic Plus DVD services lies in the Menu options. Our Basic DVD transfer is perfect for people who just require a simple DVD that can be played straight through from start to finish. Basic Plus DVDs have a more sophisticated menu, allowing viewers to skip straight to different video chapters without fast-forwarding.

Preparing tapes for submission

You can send your tape to us in any one of a variety of formats:

  • BetaSP
  • MiniDV
  • DVCAM
  • DVC Pro (excluding 50)
  • 1”

All must be high-quality dubs in NTSC format. We also need Time-codes.
We don’t currently accept VHS or S-VHS. If you have difficulty with any of the above, get a local video house service to format your tape correctly.

You also have an option to add chapters information and, if you choose our Pro DVD service, Menu graphics.

Leader

Your tape must begin and end with at least a 30-second leader. Please start 1” and BetaSP tapes with color bars and tone.

Please also check that your audio levels are at the desired level, and be sure that peaks don’t exceed 0db. Digital encoding can result in considerable loss of quality if the audio is excessively high.

Label

Clearly show the six-digit Title ID on labels placed directly on both the tape and on the case. For multiple tapes, please also include the tape number on these labels. Eg. Title ‘Blue Moon’ Tape 2/4

Do not send your master! We accept no liability for lost or damaged masters

Preparing Menu

When your EntertainOne DVD is played on a DVD player, a menu screen will automatically pop up at the start of the DVD and again at the start of each chapter – if you choose to have chapters.

With chapters, viewers can jump straight to the video chapter they wish to see. Up to 30 chapters can be included per Basic Plus DVD, and up to 18 per Pro DVD.

Basic DVDs

Our most basic DVDs do not have chapters and simply play straight through. The start-up menus are similarly straightforward, featuring only two buttons: About this DVD, which includes information about how to order more copies, and Play.

If you choose this option, we will set this simple menu up for you. Just send us your tape.

Basic Plus DVDs

These DVDs are the next level up and can include up to 18 chapters, which are specified by Time-codes and by a chapter title of no more than 30 characters.

For example:

01:02:20:00 Start of Concert
01:25:16:12 Act 2
01:54:14:15 Curtain Call

Please double-check your time-codes and titles for accuracy. They will appear exactly as we receive them!

Pro DVDs

Pro DVDs are our highest quality transfers, may carry longer-length video, and may include up to 30 chapters in the menu. If source tapes are longer than three hours, you may want to create multiple DVDs and package them as a set.

If you are sending multiple tapes, please mark each separately and include start and stop time-codes for each tape.

Your Pro DVD can also include menu graphics, if you wish. If you choose not to supply a background image, we will simply place your menu upon a blue/black background.

Preparing graphics for a Pro DVD menu

If you choose to have menu graphics for your Pro DVD, these will be based on a background image that you provide, upon which we lay the menu buttons. We provide a template to help you create your menu artwork.

You can keep your background simple with just a texture, video frame or photo upon which we add the title and text for credits. Or we can work with you to develop a sophisticated, multi layer design. The option is entirely yours.

Download Photoshop template

This template is divided into three areas:

The red area shows the ‘safe’ zone. Anything outside this safe zone may be hidden off-screen on some TVs.

The blue area is exclusively for the fixed buttons. These are partially transparent, so your background image will be semi-visible through it.

The white area is for your title and credits.

Using our template is simple with a JPEG or GIF image:

Step 1

Working in Photoshop, scale and/or crop your image to 720 x 480 pixels.

Step 2

Paste your image into the ‘Your Image Here’ area on the template.

Step 3

For a multi-layer design, be sure to keep the ‘guides’ layer on top. Create your new layer using the areas shown in the ‘guides’ layer for the title and attribution. This ‘guides’ layer can be hidden or shown as you’re working, helping you check the position of your elements.

Step 4

When complete, hide the ‘guides’ layer and Save For Web with JPEG-high quality 95.

NOTE: All graphic colors must be ‘NTSC Safe Colors’. Images can be converted to NTSC Safe Colors in Photoshop. Choose Filter, click on Video and click on NTSC Colors.

Time-codes

It is essential that you provide us with time-codes for the first and last frames, in order to ensure that the right portion of your tape gets encoded. Please enter this information on the submission form under ‘Start Time-code’ and ‘Stop Time-Code’.

For multiple tapes, the information for each tape should instead be entered in the ‘Chapters Information’ field.

Chapter Information

This is only required if you choose a Basic Plus or Pro DVD with chapters. If chapters aren’t selected, your DVD will simply play straight through, using the ‘play’ button on the menu.

Your Basic Plus DVD can include up to 18 chapters.

Your Pro DVD can include up to 30 chapters per tape.

Viewers will be directed to each chapter using the time-code followed by the chapter name. These time-codes and names will be used exactly as we receive them, so please be sure to check them for accuracy before submitting!
